If you see something, say something. Trust your gut if you see indicators of human trafficking, report it. Knowing indicators of human trafficking and some follow up questions will help you act on your gut feeling that something is wrong and report it.

Where they may be: While the victims may sometimes be kept behind locked doors, they are often hidden right in front of us at, for example, construction sites, restaurants, elder care centers, nail salons, agricultural fields, and hotels.

Why they may not accept help: Traffickers’ use of coercion – such as threats of deportation and harm to the victim or their family members – is so powerful that even if you reach out to victims, they may be too fearful to accept your help.

INDICATORS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Some Indicators of Human Trafficking:

Living with employer
Poor living conditions
Multiple people in cramped space
Inability to speak to individual alone
Answers appear to be scripted and rehearsed
Employer is holding identity documents
Signs of physical abuse
Submissive or fearful
Unpaid or paid very little
Under 18 and in prostitution

Some Questions to Ask them:

Can you leave your job if you want to?
Can you come and go as you please?
Have you been hurt or threatened if you tried to leave?
Has your family been threatened?
Do you live with your employer?
Where do you sleep and eat?
Are you in debt to your employer?
Do you have your passport/identification? Who has it?

Five Steps to Safety & Healing

The Redeeming Hope home is not a facility, not a prison, but a house with all the comforts of home. A safe space where the girls will feel the love of the community. With our staff, our social workers, our case workers, our therapists … our goal is to foster a family feeling where the girls feel safe, feel loved, and feel valued.

First Step: Local or State Police

Depending on the situation, the first contact should be local law enforcement who will either transport the victim to receive needed medical care or safe shelter, under the direction of the state’s child protective services department.

Second Step: Child Protective Services (CPS)

Child welfare caseworkers can be an invaluable resource in helping communities respond to the human trafficking of children. Once the needs are determined, the caseworker willl contact a state judge to issue an emergency and preliminary protective hearing.

Third Step: Social Worker assigned Temporary Custody

The child/minor will be assigned a caseworker who is a social worker, who will manage the child’s needs, their safety and well-being. They will also arrange a safe place to live.

Fourth Step: Foster Care or Group Home

Since many foster families may be unprepared to parent a child who has been trafficked, group homes may develop their programs specifically for children who have been trafficked. That is where Redeeming Hope comes in.

Fifth Step: Empowerment & Healing

Redeeming Hope’s mission is to provide a safe and stable home environment for sexually exploited teenage girls. We provide empowering healing to each girl with a comprehensive, holistic approach through counseling, education and support.
